*I wrote this song based on Psalm 65 in the Bible, and was inspired when my youngest son brought me a drawing he had done with "jae to lif" written in a tree. That phrase inspired the chorus of this song, and the Psalm inspired the verses.

*I received this song when my first child was a baby and have sung it to my children off-and-on since then. I acknowledge that the “heya” parts sound like they are imitating the songs of Native American peoples, but that was not my intention when I channeled this song as an offering to my children— they’re just the sounds that I heard in between the lines when I received it. I really try to be sensitive to cultural appropriation and to acknowledge the systemic racism and patterns of white privilege and entitlement that I was born into. I tried changing the line to “eya eya,’ but finally ended up deciding to record it as I had originally received it, with all respect in my heart for native communities worldwide. *I channeled this little song when my firstborn was a week old, to help him “latch on”/ nurse effectively… and it worked! I didn’t know if it would help other babies, and didn’t share it with many other people. 10 years later I had the instinct to share it with a mother friend of mine, as she had a baby who was fussing about nursing. After I shared it, she told me that in Bali, where she had lived, “susu” was the word for milk! So the song literally translates as “milk-milk-milk-milk-milk”… I was so delighted, and realized that the song might be useful to other mothers and babies, so I recorded it to share.

*This song was co-written by Aimee Ringle, myself and my daughter Olivia Rose, when she was 8. One night at “candle time” (our pre-bed prayer time), Aimee was playing a guitar piece she had been playing for years, entitled “I was there in the room,” about being in the room when a baby is born. Olivia started whispering words in my ears, saying that they were the words for the song and asked me to sing them. As she whispered the lyrics to me, I put them to a melody that worked with Aimee’s guitar part. And “How Much Love” was born…
